Champion was developed by WestBred LLC, Bozeman Montana from a cross made in 1997 between Baronesse and Camas. Champion is a two-rowed, medium height, hulled spring geed barley. The lateral, sterile florets are greatly reduced. It is mid-season in maturity and adapted to the intermountain areas of the pacific Northwest. The stem has a slightly waxy coating, and anthocyanin can be present (the degree of expression of anthocyanin is highly influenced by phosphate levels in the soil. Champion has a closed collar and the neck is straight. The leaves are slightly waxy in appearance and anthocyanin is absent in the leaf auricle. Anthocyanin can be present in the veins of the lemma. The head is erect (not dense), tapering shaped, slightly waxy and nodding at maturity. The glume length is 1/2 the length of the lemma and the flume is covered with short hairs. The flume awns are equal to the length of the glumes and the surface is rough. The lemma is awned, and the awns are rough. Lemma teeth are absent and lemma hairs are present, and the rachilla hair is long. The seed is long, wrinkled, and has a white or colorless aleurone.
Champion has been evaluated for yield, quality, standability, and general agronomics in public trails. Champion has been found to be well adapted to the Northwest Region of the US.
