Foundation class seed is the first generation of seed available to the public and is the basis for the production of registered and certified seed.
Certified seed is seed produced to preserve genetic purity and the identity of seed stocks, which creates guaranteed quality, cleaner fields and higher yields.

The Washington State Crop Improvement Association Foundation Seed Service, through a memorandum of agreement with Washington State University and Oregon State University, has the authority and responsibility for producing and distributing breeder and foundation seed of publicly released WSU and OSU varieties. Foundation class seed is the first generation of seed available to the public and is the basis for the production of registered and certified seed.
